Vintage Crochet Girl's Jacket Free Pattern |
Modern Pattern:
This vintage crochet pattern creates a jacket using a combination of block and loop stitches. You'll need approximately 12 skeins of worsted weight yarn (like a 4-ply) in gray and 1 skein in blue.
Body of Jacket:
Chain 52.
Row 1: Double crochet (dc) in the 8th chain from the hook. Chain 3, skip 3 chains, dc in the next chain. Repeat from * 10 times, creating 12 loops total. Turn.
Row 2: Chain 4 (counts as a treble crochet), 3 treble crochets (tr) in the first loop. Chain 1, 3 tr in the next loop. Repeat from * across the row, ending with 4 tr. Turn.
Row 3: Chain 4, dc under the first chain space. Chain 3, dc under the next chain space. Repeat to the end of the row.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 twenty-three times, creating 24 rows of blocks in total, alternating with rows of loops.
Shaping the Fronts and Back:
Divide the width into thirds: 4 blocks for the back of the neck and 4 for each front. Work as Row 3 (loops) for 4 blocks, with the last block consisting of 4 tr. Turn and work back as Row 3. Repeat these two rows twice more.
Widening for Fronts:
On the next row (widening row), work 6 tr under the 4th loop, chain 4. Turn. Skip 3 of the 6 tr, dc between the next 2 tr, chain 3, attach with a slip stitch under the chain-1 space, and continue across the row. This row will have 5 blocks. Work 20 rows of 5 blocks each in this manner, making the front the same length as the back. Make the other front exactly the same way.
Border:
Row 1: Attach the yarn at the corner of the neck (at the end of the first row of 5 blocks). Work in blocks down the front, across the bottom (work 3 extra tr at each corner for smooth turning), up over the shoulder, down the back, and around to the opposite corner, omitting the chain stitch between the blocks.
Row 2: Attach the blue yarn at the right front and work a row of loops as described in Row 1, attaching the chains between the groups of 3 tr.
Work 3 more rows of blocks (gray yarn), always working 3 extra tr (6 total) at the corners for turning. Follow the block rows with a row of blue loops.
Sleeves:
Fold the jacket evenly. Attach the yarn at the back of the jacket at the desired width for the sleeve (9 blocks from the top of the shoulder in this example). Chain 9, attach to the front, and work around the armhole with a row of loops (gray yarn), creating 21 loops total (3 under the arm). Chain 3, 2 tr under the first loop, chain 1, 3 tr under the next loop. Repeat around and join. Repeat the rows of loops and blocks to the desired sleeve length (25 rows of blocks in this example, ending with a row of loops).
Cuffs:
Leave 7 blocks at the top of the sleeve. Attach the yarn in the 8th loop (the 3rd loop from the center loop at the top of the sleeve). Work around as usual to the 3rd loop from the center on the other side. Turn, work a row of loops, then a row of blocks. Attach the blue yarn to the sleeve and work around the cuff with loops. Work a row of blocks with 6 tr at the corners for turning, and continue to match the jacket border, working 4 rows of blocks and 3 rows of blue loops.
Collar:
Attach the yarn at the corner of the neck in the first block of the border. Work 3 tr in the same place. Work a block in the side of each of the next 3 blocks along the neck toward the back, with a chain 1 between. Work 2 blocks in the side of the next block (to widen), 6 blocks, widen again, and 3 blocks. Follow with a row of loops and continue as for the cuffs, widening as directed, and twice working 6 tr under each of two consecutive loops in the outer row. Join at the beginning and end of each row to the upper edge of the jacket border.
Finishing:
Work a final border of loops as follows: Dc between blocks, (chain 3, dc in the same place) twice. Repeat from * around.
Using the blue yarn, crochet a chain long enough to lace under the arms, finishing the ends with loops like the edge. Tie in a bow. Make shorter chains for each cuff, lace them together, and tie in small bows. Use a similar chain to draw in the neck.
You can use any colors you like. This jacket can be easily sized up for an adult by increasing the initial chain length and adding more rows of blocks and loops. It's beautiful in blue and white for a baby.
