Vintage Crochet Child's Hood No. 2 Free Pattern |
Modern Pattern:
This vintage crochet hood pattern uses a worsted weight yarn (like a 4-ply) and a medium-sized hook. It's designed for a small child but can be easily adapted for larger sizes. The pattern uses US crochet terminology.
Hood Body (Crown):
Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as a treble crochet), work 19 treble crochets (tr) into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-3.
Round 2: Draw up a loop, insert hook in the first stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, insert hook in the next stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through all loops on the hook, chain 1. (This is a wedge stitch). Insert hook in the same stitch, draw up a loop, yarn over, insert hook in the next stitch, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through all stitches on the hook, chain 1. Repeat from * until there are 19 wedge stitches in the round. Join with a slip stitch.
Round 3: Draw up a loop, insert hook in the first chain-1 space, draw up a loop, yarn over, insert hook in the next chain-1 space, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through all loops on the hook, chain 1. Insert hook in the same space, draw up a loop, yarn over, insert hook in the next space, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through all stitches on the hook, chain 1. Repeat from * around, widening by working 2 wedge stitches in every 3rd space of the previous round.
Round 4: Widen in every 5th stitch (work 2 wedge stitches in one space).
Round 5: Work even (no widening).
Round 6: Widen in every 3rd stitch.
Rounds 7-9: Work even (no widening).
Neck Shaping:
Round 10: Work even to within 7 stitches of the end. Break the yarn and re-attach at the beginning of the round.
Rounds 11-15: Repeat Round 10, leaving the 7 stitches unworked for the back of the neck.
Border:
Round 16: Attach yarn, chain 3, and work a tr in every stitch around the entire edge of the hood. For a decorative touch, consider using a strand of "ice wool" (a novelty textured yarn) held together with the Germantown wool for the border.
Rounds 17-18: Double crochet (dc) in each stitch around the bottom (neck) edge of the hood.
Rounds 19-23: Dc in each stitch across the front edge of the hood, working in both loops (not the back loop only).
Finishing:
Turn back the border. Add a ribbon bow at the back of the hood, a rosette on top, and ribbon ties.
Sizing:
To make the hood larger, continue widening the crown until it reaches the desired size. This will make the front proportionally longer and the neck wider. Any stitch (plain or fancy) can be used, following the general instructions for shaping.
